Miacademy’s Online Elementary Math Curriculum

From buying groceries to planning out your schedule, math is a big part of our lives. Even as children, we use math to count spaces in a board game or decide how many cookies to snack on. That’s why a strong math curriculum is key to a well-balanced education. The best math curriculum will help elementary students build a positive relationship with math and become confident problem solvers as adults.

Miacademy’s math curriculum for elementary students covers everything they need to know while encouraging critical thinking skills. Students learn addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as when to use each operation. Students also learn about fractions, measurements, and geometry while practicing their problem solving and mental math skills. This helps them succeed in their current grade level and prepares them for middle school.

Early Elementary Math Curriculum

Early elementary students enjoy hands-on activities that make math tangible and make sense for them. Whether it’s blocks, dominos, or beans, students can gain an understanding of number sense through their senses.

Math: Level A

Suggested Grade: K

Our kindergarten math curriculum focuses on basic number sense and investigation into the world around them. The concepts of “how many” and “how much” help students succeed once they start using those numbers to solve problems.

Kindergarteners work on:

  • 2D Shapes
  • Counting to 20
  • Adding within 10
  • Subtracting within 10
  • Place value

Math: Level B

Suggested Grade: 1st

First graders learn place value to understand the difference between tens and ones and understand how tens are made. Students also work with addition by grouping when they tell time and count money. For example, students practice when they count minutes in groups of five or dimes as groups of 10. These concepts will set them up for success in multiplication.

Our 1st grade math curriculum includes:

  • Fact families
  • Place value
  • 2-digit addition and subtraction
  • Basic fractions
  • Telling time
  • Counting money

Math: Level C

Suggested Grade: 2nd

Second graders will begin solving word problems that connect math to the real world. Second graders are also able to work with three digits in addition and subtraction. They are beginning to work with patterns in operations that will help them with multiplication and division.

Our 2nd grade math curriculum includes:

  • 2D and 3D shapes
  • Basic word problems
  • 2-digit subtraction
  • Telling time
  • Addition and subtraction with regrouping
  • Introduction to multiplication

Math: Level D

Suggested Grade: 3rd

Third graders continue learning more advanced multiplication and division. They will also learn how to read more measuring tools, estimate lengths, compare fractions, and calculate perimeter.

Our 3rd grade math curriculum includes:

  • 4-digit addition, 3-digit subtraction
  • 2-digit word problems
  • Basic multiplication and division
  • Finding equivalent fractions
  • Adding and subtracting fractions
  • Rounding and perimeter
  • Measurements
  • Roman numerals

Upper Elementary Math Curriculum

Math: Level E

Suggested Grade: 4th

Fourth graders rely on previous concepts to solve word problems with multiplication and long division. Students will also find the area of squares and rectangles and apply addition and subtraction to money with decimals.

Our 4th grade math curriculum includes:

  • Adding and subtracting decimals
  • Adding and subtracting improper fractions
  • Two-digit multiplication
  • More measurements, including centimeters, inches, ounces, and pounds
  • Lines, angles, area, and perimeter
  • Long division

Math: Level F

Suggested Grade: 5th

Students in fifth grade continue to combine important individual skills, like long division and division with remainders as fractions. Multiplying unknown numbers uses what students know about multiplication and division to prepare them for middle school math.

Our 5th grade math curriculum includes:

  • Long division and divisibility rules
  • Conversions between mixed numbers and improper fractions
  • Operations with mixed numbers
  • Operations with decimals
  • Dividing with remainder as a fraction and decimal
  • Advanced inequalities
  • Graphing skills with a coordinate plane

Using our Online Homeschool Curriculum

We design our homeschool math curriculum around creating a positive relationship with math. We provide plenty of demonstrations in our video lessons to help students fully grasp new concepts before moving on. For students, seeing math come alive and learning at their own pace can make math more accessible and enjoyable.

Parents also celebrate our community features, which allow students to apply their math skills in real-world situations. In our Design Studio, children can use their Gold to design products for their shop, advertise in the newspaper, buy and feed pets, and play games that review what they’re learning.

In addition, we design our online curriculum with the flexibility to fit your child’s unique needs in mind. Many families use it as their main curriculum or as a supplement to their child’s public school education.

Plus, we make it easy to switch or start your curriculum at any time! With our customizable, self-paced curriculum, your child won’t have to repeat topics that they’ve already done and can start learning within minutes!
