3rd Grade Math Curriculum
In third grade, students now have a good grasp on basic math concepts such as addition, subtraction, and basic shapes. This year, students will learn about multiplication, beginning to memorize multiplication tables and even simple division rules. Students will also expand on their knowledge of measurement and geometry to calculate perimeter and area.
Our 3rd grade math curriculum uses life-based learning — and we’re not just talking about word problems! In each lesson, students will follow Justin and Mia through situations like a community market, a family barbecue, and the park to learn about real-world math applications.
3rd Grade Math – 50 Objectives
Learning objectives are clear statements of what your child should know or be able to do by the end of a lesson. These objectives show exactly what your child is working toward, and show how we break up a big subject into manageable, trackable steps.
Numeracy: Whole Numbers
- Interpret numbers up to 4-digits written in digits, word form, expanded form, or a visual model
- Compare 4-digit numbers using <, >, =, and ≠ symbols
- Understand the purpose and place commas in numbers with 4 digits
- Introduce the idea of multiples
- Understand that factors are the numbers being multiplied to equal a product
Numeracy: Place Value
- Place value of numbers up to 9,999
- Rounding whole numbers to the tens, hundreds, or thousands place
- Understand regrouping through place value
- Understand that place values are 10 times bigger or 10 times smaller
Numeracy: Fractions and Decimals
- Understand that fractions represent part of a whole
- Identify and represent fractions using digits, words, and visual models
- Recognize equivalent fractions
- Compare fractions with like denominators
- Compare fractions with UNlike denominators
Operations: Simple Addition/Subtraction
- Represent addition problems with visual models and addition algorithm
- Identify the parts of an addition equation: addends and sum
- Add whole numbers to the thousands, including regrouping
- Represent subtraction problems with visual models and subtraction algorithm
- Identify the parts of a subtraction equation: subtrahend, minuend, and difference
- Subtract whole numbers to the thousands, including regrouping
Operations: Simple Multiplication/Division
- Understand multiplication using visual models, arrays, and/or repeated addition
- Identify the parts of a multiplication equation: factors and product
- Multiply using fact families from 0x-12x
- Understand division using visual models, arrays, and/or repeated subtraction
- Divide using fact families from 0x-12x
- Understand it’s mathematically impossible to divide by 0
- Solve for missing factors, dividends, or divisors in multiplication and division fact problems
Geometry: Perimeter
- Understand perimeter as the distance around the outside of a shape
- Calculate the perimeter of a polygon or find a missing side length
Geometry: Area
- Understand area as the total space a 2D object takes up or the space inside a 2D object
- Understand area as a measurement of square units
- Calculate the area of a square or rectangular object or find a missing side length
- Determine the area of a composite shape by counting the square units within
Measurement, Data and Probability: Measurement
- Determine which unit of measure to use in a given situation
- Understand what length represents as a measurement
- Convert between inches, feet, and yards using patterns or multiplication/division
- Measure length to quarter-inch measurements
- Understand what volume represents as a measurement
- Convert between fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons using patterns or multiplication/division
- Measure the volume of objects to quarter-cup measurements
Measurement, Data and Probability: Representing and Interpreting Data
- Design, scale, create, and read pictographs
- Design, scale, create, and read bar graphs
- Design, scale, create, and read line plots
- Determine the appropaite scale for a graph or chart
- Introduction to x-axis and y-axis
Measurement, Data and Probability: Telling Time
- Telling time to the minute
- Determining elapsed time
Measurement, Data and Probability: Probability
- Determine probability based on a set of objects and represent it as a fraction
Graphing: The Number Line
- Introduction to placing fractions on number lines
Graphing: The Coordinate Plane
- Introduction to x-axis and y-axis as it pertains to graphing data (x horizontal, y vertical)

3rd Grade Math Curriculum (Math Level D)
3rd grade math lessons begin to tackle more multiplication and division, advanced word problems, four-digit addition, and three-digit subtraction. Students will explore fractions in greater depth, learning to find equivalents, as well as add and subtract fractions. The curriculum also introduces rounding, advanced measuring, and perimeter calculating. By presenting these concepts in real-world scenarios, our curriculum boosts confidence in everyday practical math applications.
