4th Grade Math Curriculum
By the fourth grade, students now have a good grasp on basic math concepts, such as addition, subtraction, measurement, and shapes. This year, students will begin to combine their knowledge of the four operations to solve multi-step problems. They’ll also touch on more advanced geometry concepts, as well as decimals and advanced place value.
4th Grade Math – 55 Objectives
Learning objectives are clear statements of what your child should know or be able to do by the end of a lesson. These objectives show exactly what your child is working toward, and show how we break up a big subject into manageable, trackable steps.
Numeracy: Whole Numbers
- Interpret numbers up to 7-digits when written in digits, word form, or expanded form
- Compare 7-digit numbers
- Understand the purpose and place commas in numbers with 4+ digits
- Identify and list multiples; explain the difference between factors and multiples
- Identify and list the factors of a given number up to 100
- Understand the difference between prime and composite numbers; identify examples of each up to 100
Numeracy: Place Value
- Place value of numbers from the millions place to hundredths place
- Rounding numbers to any place up to the millions
- Understand that place values are 10 or 100 times bigger or 1/10 or 1/100 times smaller.
- Decimal place value to the hundredths
Numeracy: Fractions and Decimals
- Simplify fractions to lowest terms
- Use understanding of equivalent fractions to find common denominators
- Compare and order fractions; for fractions with unlike denominators, use strategies such as finding benchmark fractions or finding a common denominator
- Interpret fractions greater than 1 as improper fractions or mixed numbers and be able to convert between the two forms
- Converting between fractions and decimals, ie 6/10 = .6 and 14/100 = .14
- Ordering and comparing fractions and decimals
Operations: Simple Addition/Subtraction
- Add whole numbers to the millions, including regrouping
- Subtract whole numbers to the millions, including regrouping
- Adding and subtracting fractions, including those with unlike denominators and fractions greater than 1
- Adding and subtracting decimals to the hundredths
Operations: Simple Multiplication/Division
- Solve for missing factors, dividends, or divisors in multiplication and division problems
- Multi-digit multiplication, up to 2-digit by 2-digit and 4-digit by 1-digit using the standard algorithm, partial products, and/or the distributive property
- Multiplying fractions by whole numbers and fractions by fractions
- Long division with up to a 4-digit dividend and a 1-digit divisor, including division with remainders represented as fractions or decimals
- Represent remainders as fractions or decimals
Geometry: Shapes and Their Properties
- Identify and name polygons by their sides, up to a 10-sided decagon
- Classify polygons as regular or irregular
- Recognize and use hatch marks to note when sides or angles have the same measure
- Classify triangles by side length: scalene, isosceles, equilateral
- Classify triangles by angle measurement: acute, right, obtuse
- Identify and describe quadrilaterals based on sides and angles: square, rectangle, trapezoid, rhombus, kite, parallelogram
- Identify the number of lines of symmetry (if any) in complex shapes
- Create and extend growing and repeating patterns using geometric shapes
Geometry: Perimeter
- Calculate perimeter of a polygon or find a missing side length
Geometry: Area
- Calculate the area of a composite shape by finding the area of square/rectangular parts
Geometry: Plane Geometry
- Define and identify points, lines, line segments and rays
- Identify whether a pair of lines is parallel, perpendicular, or neither
Geometry: Angles
- Measure angles with a protractor
- Define and describe the differences between acute, right, obtuse, and straight angles
Measurement, Data and Probability: Measurement
- Recall the names and sizes of length units: inches, feet, yards, and miles
- Recall the names and sizes of volume units: fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons
- Recall the names and sizes of weight units: ounces, pounds, tons
- Convert between customary measurement units using multiplication and division
- Recall the names of metric units: meter for length, liter for volume, and gram for mass
- Recall common metric prefixes and their meanings: kilo- and centi-
- Convert between metric units using multiplication and division
Measurement, Data and Probability: Representing and Interpreting Data
- Read data from a bar graph
- Read data from a frequency chart
- Read data from a line plot
- Read data from a single-line graph
- Determine the appropriate scale for a graph or chart
Measurement, Data and Probability: Money
- Solve word problems that involve adding and subtracting dollar amounts
- Represent dollar amounts as decimals $_.__
Relationships Between Values: Functions
- First introduction of an input/output table, in context with converting measurements
- Use pattern recognition to identify and extend the rule/pattern in a table

In fourth grade, students build on previously learned skills to tackle more complex problems, especially multi-step multiplication and long division word problems.
Our fourth grade math curriculum covers key topics like two-digit multiplication, long division, and working with both decimals and improper fractions. Students explore measurement more deeply, using units like centimeters, inches, ounces, and pounds.
