5th Grade Math Curriculum
Math for fifth grade students introduces concepts such as operations with decimals, coordinate plane graphs, and basic algebraic thinking. This year, students will spend time deepening their understanding, developing problem-solving strategies, and preparing for more abstract math in middle school. At Miacademy, our fifth grade math curriculum supports this growth with engaging video lessons, interactive practice, and a personalized learning path that makes math both fun and effective!
5th Grade Math – 43 Objectives
Learning objectives are clear statements of what your child should know or be able to do by the end of a lesson. These objectives show exactly what your child is working toward, and show how we break up a big subject into manageable, trackable steps.
Numeracy: Place Value
- Place value of numbers from millions place to thousandths place
- Round numbers to any place, including decimals
- Understand that place values are 10/100/1000 times bigger or 1/10, 1/100, 1/1000 times smaller.
- Decimal place value to the thousandths
Numeracy: Fractions and Decimals
- Compare and order fractions; for fractions with unlike denominators, use strategies such as finding benchmark fractions or finding a common denominator
- Interpret fractions greater than 1 as improper fractions or mixed numbers and be able to convert between the two forms
- Understand the difference between terminating decimals, repeating decimals, and non-terminating decimals
- Converting between SOME fractions/decimals, ie that 1/4=0.25
- Ordering and comparing fractions and decimals. Fractions include unlike denominators, fractions greater than 1, or fractions not in simplest form. Decimals go up to the thousandths place.
Operations: Simple Addition/Subtraction
- Adding and subtracting fractions, including those with unlike denominators and fractions greater than 1
- Adding and subtracting decimals to the thousandths place
Operations: Simple Multiplication/Division
- Multi-digit multiplication using the standard algorithm
- Multiplying fractions
- Multiplying decimals to the hundredths place
- Dividing fractions by whole numbers
- Whole number division up to 4-digit dividends and 2 digit-divisors
Operations: Order of Operations
- Introduction to the order of operations
- Interpret expressions with grouping symbols including parentheses, brackets, or braces
Operations: Exponents
- Use whole number exponents to represent powers of 10
Geometry: Shapes and Their Properties
- Classify polygons in a hierarchy based on their properties
- Understand that the properties of a polygon belonging to one category will also belong to the subcategories of that category
Geometry: Perimeter
- Find perimeter of polygons
Geometry: Area
- Rectangles
- Triangles
Geometry: Surface Area
- Find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths
Geometry: Volume
- Understand volume as the 3-dimensional space inside of an object
- Find the volume of a right rectangular prism by packing it with unit cubes
- Find the volume of a right rectangular prism using V=lwh
- Recognize volume of composed shapes as additive
- Learn about cubic units for volume
Geometry: Angles
- Find complementary and supplementary angles
Measurement, Data and Probability: Measurement
- Convert between customary measurement units using multiplication and division
- Convert between metric units using multiplication and division
Measurement, Data and Probability: Representing and Interpreting Data
- Create line graphs by plotting and connecting data points
- Create bar graphs by organizing and drawing bars to represent data
- Analyze line graphs and bar graphs in order to answer questions about the data
Graphing: The Coordinate Plane
- Interpret and graph (x, y) points in quadrant 1
- Recognize x and y axes as perpendicular number lines that intersect at 0 on each line
- Identify the origin at (0,0)
- Understand (x,y) coordinates as a location on the coordinate plane
- Understand that x represents the distance from the origin horizontally
- Understand that y represents the distance from the origin vertically
- Graph points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane
Course Information
5th Grade Math Curriculum (Math Level F)
Our fifth grade math curriculum strongly emphasizes operations with mixed numbers and decimals, as well as conversions between mixed numbers and improper fractions. By exploring the relationship between multiplication and division, students begin working with unknowns — an important step toward developing algebraic thinking.
