1st Grade Math Curriculum

After mastering kindergarten math skills, students are ready to level up to first grade math concepts! In first grade, students will build on previous knowledge with two-digit numbers, 2D and 3D shapes, and more complex pattern completion.

Our first grade math curriculum helps students build basic number sense they’ll use every day. From telling time to counting money, 1st grade math teaches real-world skills, laying the foundation for more complex math concepts later on.

Numeracy: Whole Numbers
  • Counting forwards and backwards from ANY number within 20
  • Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s within 100; including using pennies, nickels, and dimes
  • Compare numbers up to 120 using >, <, and = symbols
  • Write 2-digit numbers in expanded form and relate expanded form to the formation of a number using base ten blocks
Numeracy: Place Value
  • Understand that the two digits in a two digit number represent amounts of tens and ones
Represent numbers up to 20 using base ten models
  • Understand that the three digits in a three-digit number represent the amount of hundreds, tens, and ones
  • Use place value to add or subtract 10 mentally
  • Understand regrouping from the ones to the tens in terms of place value
  • Use place value when comparing numbers
Numeracy: Fractions and Decimals
  • Apply understanding of parts and wholes to identify missing parts and whole
  • Determine if a number is part of a given whole
  • Relate addition and subtraction sentences to parts and a whole
  • Identify examples and non-examples of halves and fourths
Operations: Simple Addition/Subtraction
  • Use the concept of parts/wholes to compose and decompose numbers
  • Identify and generate all combinations of numbers that add up to ten, using manipulatives, drawings, and equations
  • Solve addition sentences within 20, including representing word problems
  • Add three 1-digit numbers
  • Add 1-digit numbers with re-grouping from the ones to tens
  • Add 2-digit numbers without regrouping
  • Solve addition problems with missing numbers
  • Identify and create fact families, understanding the relationships between addition and subtraction within those families
  • Solve subtraction sentences within 20, including using the relationship between addition and subtraction; ie 8+4=12, so 12-8=4
  • Subtract multiples of 10 within 10-90
  • Subtract 2-digit numbers without regrouping
  • Add and subtract coins up to $1
  • Solve subtraction problems with missing numbers
Geometry: Shapes and Their Properties
  • Identify and name basic 2D and 3D shapes
  • Distinguish between open and closed shapes
  • Recognize and create composite shapes from two or more other shapes
  • Identify and extend repeating patterns using geometric shapes
Measurement, Data, and Probability: Measurement
  • Use rulers to measure in whole inches
  • Use metric rulers to measure in whole centimeters
  • Estimate lengths in inches or centimeters before measuring
Measurement, Data, and Probability: Representing and Interpreting Data
  • Represent data on picture graphs and bar graphs
  • Interpret data from picture graphs and bar graphs such as total counts, comparisons, and differences
Measurement, Data, and Probability: Telling Time
  • Telling time to the hour
  • Telling time to the half hour
Measurement, Data, and Probability: Money
  • Identify and determine the values of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters
  • Use cents symbol ¢
Graphing: The Number Line
  • Solve addition and subtraction problems using a number line

In this course, first graders will expand their understanding of numbers and numerical relationships. Students will review and practice single-digit addition and subtraction before expanding their knowledge to two-digit numbers.

Students will also be introduced to basic fractions, measurement, telling time, and counting money. Students will practice counting minutes in groups of five or dimes as groups of 10, preparing them for basic multiplication in 2nd and 3rd grade.

  7. Patterns & Relationships – Identifying and extending simple patterns and recognizing number relationships
  8. Basic Fractions – Understanding simple fractions like halves and quarters through visual models

Your student is most likely ready for 1st grade math if they can:

  • Recognize and write numbers up to at least 20
  • Count forward and backward within 20
  • Understand basic addition and subtraction concepts
  • Solve simple word problems with objects or drawings
  • Recognize and name basic shapes
