2nd Grade Math Curriculum
After mastering first grade math skills, students are ready to tackle exciting new 2nd grade math concepts! In second grade, students build on their foundational knowledge by working with three-digit numbers, learning addition and subtraction with regrouping, exploring measurement and data, and recognizing the basics of multiplication.
Our second grade math curriculum helps students strengthen their number sense and apply math in everyday life. From solving word problems to working with money, time, and place value, second grade math builds essential problem-solving skills that prepare students for more advanced concepts.
2nd Grade Math – 37 Objectives
Learning objectives are clear statements of what your child should know or be able to do by the end of a lesson. These objectives show exactly what your child is working toward, and show how we break up a big subject into manageable, trackable steps.
Numeracy: Whole Numbers
- Identify whether a group of objects (up to 20) is odd or even by pairing objects
- Compare up to three-digit numbers using >, <, and = symbols
Numeracy: Place Value
- Understand that the three digits in a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones
- Read and write numbers to 1,000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
- Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits
Numeracy: Fractions and Decimals
- Divide objects into halves, thirds, and fourths
- Identify examples and non-examples of halves, thirds, and fourths
- Explain that the more fractional parts used to make a whole, the smaller the part; and the fewer the fractional parts, the larger the part
Operations: Simple Addition/Subtraction
- Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies related to properties of operations, place value and the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction
- Add up to four two-digit numbers
- Add and subtract within 1000 using concrete models (base ten blocks, number line diagram); sometimes requiring the composition or decomposition of tens or hundreds
- “Mentally add and subtract 10 or 100 to a given
- number 100–900″
- Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems
- Solve addition and subtraction problems with unknowns in all positions
- Use addition to find the total number of objects in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and 5 columns
- Write equations to express the total number of objects in a rectangular array as a sum of equal addends
- Write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends (e.g., 8 = 4 + 4).
Geometry: Shapes and Their Properties
- Compose 2D and 3D shapes with given properties or attributes
- Classify and sort polygons with 12 or fewer sides
- Classify and sort 3D shapes based on attributes using formal geometric language
- Decompose 2D shapes, ie a rectangle into two triangles
- Identify and extend growing and repeating patterns using geometric shapes
- Identify lines of symmetry
Measurement, Data and Probability: Measurement
- Select and use appropriate tools to measure the length of an object to half-inch measurements
- Measure and compare an object’s length in two different units and explain how the measurements relate to the unit used
- Estimate the length of objects
- Measure to determine the difference in length between two objects
- Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths given in the same units
Measurement, Data and Probability: Representing and Interpreting Data
- Represent data in picture and bar graphs (with a single-unit scale)
- Use data from bar graphs to solve simple arithmetic problems
- Represent data using tally marks, with a diagonal mark to show bundles of 5
Measurement, Data and Probability: Telling Time
- Telling time to the quarter hour
- Telling time to the 5-minute mark
Measurement, Data and Probability: Money
- Solve word problems that involve transactions with dollar bills and coins
- Use cents symbol ¢
- Use dollar symbol $
Graphing: The Number Line
- Use a number line diagram to show whole-number sums and differences within 100
Course Information
2nd Grade Math Curriculum (Math Level C)
Second graders will begin solving word problems about everyday situations to help them connect math to its real-world applications. At this stage, they’re also working with three-digit numbers in both addition and subtraction, building their confidence with larger numbers. Plus, they’re beginning to explore patterns in operations, building foundational skills to assist students in learning multiplication and division.
