What Is the Texas School Voucher Program (TEFA)?
This new Texas school choice bill, also called the Texas voucher program, was created by the state legislature in 2025 to give families more choices in their children’s educations.
Starting in the 2026-27 school year, funds will be available to accepted eligible students that can be used for tuition, tutoring, homeschool educational expenses, or other approved education expenses.
The program will be overseen by the Texas Comptroller’s office and administered by Odyssey as the certified educational assistance organization (CEAO). Award amounts equal 85% of the statewide average of per-student public school funding.
For the 2026-27 school year, award amounts will be:
- $2,000 for homeschooled students
- $10,474 for students attending an approved private school
- Up to $30,000 for students with disabilities
Who Qualifies for TEFA?
Your child may be eligible if:
- You are a Texas resident
- Your child is eligible to attend a Texas public school, charter school, or Pre-K program
In general, the program is open to families who meet standard school enrollment requirements.
For the first year of the program, applications will be prioritized in this order:
- Students with disabilities from households earning up to 500% of the Federal Poverty Level
- Lower-income families (up to 200% of the Federal Poverty Level)
- Middle-income families (200% to 500% of the Federal Poverty Level)
- Higher-income families (above 500% of the Federal Poverty Level)
Within the highest income group, priority is given to students who previously attended a Texas public or charter school most of the year. This group is capped at 20% of total program funding.
For Year 2 of the program, priority will be given to:
- Siblings of students already in the program
- If one child in your family is accepted, eligible siblings who apply at the same time will also be accepted.
- New applicants
- Students who left the program and later return
