MAP Growth Testing with Miacademy

Academic growth looks different for every child. For homeschool families, seeing that growth clearly can be one of the most valuable tools you have. That’s why Miacademy is exploring a partnership with NWEA to bring MAP Growth to our users!

The NWEA MAP test is a standardized assessment used by millions of students across the U.S. It’s an adaptive, growth-focused test designed to meet your child exactly where they are, and to give you a meaningful picture of their progress over time.

Why Test?

We know that for many homeschool families, your experience with standardized testing might have included pressure, rigidity, or a one-size-fits-all approach that doesn’t reflect how your child actually learns.

MAP Growth is built around a different purpose: measuring individual growth over time, not ranking students against each other. Because of this unique design, it’s one of the most common standardized assessments used by homeschoolers. Here’s why families find it worthwhile:

  • Growth tracking over time. Because MAP Growth uses a consistent scale across years, you can see real academic progress from one testing window to the next. This gives you insight to the total learning trajectory, instead of just a single snapshot.
  • Strengths and gaps, clearly named. Results highlight where your child is excelling and where they might benefit from more attention, in specific skill areas, rather than just a broad subject score.
  • An outside reference point. Curriculum-based assessments tell you what your child has covered. MAP Growth tells you how deeply they’ve learned it, relative to a national sample.
  • Portfolio and transcript support. Standardized results can be meaningful documentation for college applications, dual enrollment, co-ops, or industry certification programs.
  • Low-stakes test familiarity. For students who’ll eventually take college entrance exams or professional certifications, practicing in a low-pressure environment helps reduce anxiety later.
  • Insight into your instruction. For parents who are also the teacher, growth data across subjects can inform what’s working in your curriculum and where you might want to try something different.

What is MAP Growth?

MAP Growth is an assessment developed by NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) and used by millions of students across the U.S. Here’s what makes it different from a typical standardized test:

  1. Adaptive: The test adjusts as your child works. A correct answer leads to a slightly harder question; an incorrect one leads to a slightly easier one. This means the test finds the edge of a student’s knowledge rather than testing students against a fixed grade-level standard.
  2. Untimed: There’s no countdown clock. Most students finish in 45-60 minutes per subject, but your child can work at their own pace without pressure.
  3. Growth-focused: Results are reported as a RIT score — a stable scale that doesn’t change year to year, so you can compare your child’s performance across multiple testing windows and actually see progress.
  4. Grade-independent: MAP Growth doesn’t penalize students for working above or below grade level. It accurately measures where your child actually is.
  5. Computer-based: Students take the test on a computer or tablet. No paper, no pencils, and no special software to install ahead of time.

MAP Testing for Homeschoolers with Miacademy

Meaningful assessments are an essential part of any homeschooling journey. That’s why we’re launching MAP Growth With Miacademy as a limited pilot for the 2026-27 school year! Participation is free for up to 1,000 families. There is no cost to apply or test. Seats are limited, and enrollment is application-based, so families will need to apply to reserve a spot.

Testing data from the pilot will also help Miacademy better understand how our students are growing academically and where we can improve how we serve them. Participating families aren’t just getting a meaningful way to monitor their student’s growth this school year — they’re also contributing to something that benefits the entire Miacademy community.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Our initial cohort for this pilot program will include up to 1,000 students between grades 2-8.
  • There will be no additional cost to participating families. We will cover the MAP Growth fees for all testing sessions this year.
  • Students will be tested three times: once at the beginning of the school year, once during the middle, and once at the end. This is to help you build an understanding of their growth over time in a way that a single snapshot can’t.
  • During each testing window, we will offer multiple proctored testing sessions over a 2-4 week period to ensure every family can find a time to test that works for them.

We’re planning to open the application in July. If you’re interested in this program, please sign up here so we can reach out to you first!

What to Expect on Test Day

We know tests can be stressful for students, but MAP Growth makes it easy. Additionally, our team will be here to support you every step of the way! Here’s what to expect during your MAP Growth assessment:

  • We’ll guide you through it. Miacademy staff will securely proctor each testing session and send families clear instructions in advance: what to have ready, how to log in, and what your child will see on screen.
  • Your child works at their own pace. The test is untimed and adaptive, so there’s no need to rush. Students can flag questions to revisit and work through each section comfortably.
  • Student privacy is protected. MAP Growth is administered through NWEA’s secure platform. Student data is never sold or shared for advertising purposes.
  • The platform is secure and proctored. Testing sessions are monitored to maintain the integrity of results. We’ll share proctoring guidelines with families in advance. It’s a straightforward process designed to be as low-stress as possible.
  • You’ll get results you can actually use. After each test, families receive a report explaining their student’s scores, what they mean, and how their child has grown over time.

No. Participation in this pilot program is completely voluntary. There’s no impact on your Miacademy account or your child’s coursework if you choose to participate or not.

MAP Growth With Miacademy is free for all pilot participants. Standardized testing can be expensive to access independently, and removing that barrier is part of why we’re exploring this partnership.

The pilot cohort is limited to approximately 1,000 students and is application-based. Families will need to apply to reserve a spot. There are no requirements to apply other than having a student between grades 2-8 who uses Miacademy as their primary curriculum! Full application details will be available when registration opens.

For this pilot program, we will only be administering the math and reading portions of the MAP Growth assessment. Each subject usually takes students about 45 minutes to complete.

Not much preparation is needed. MAP Growth is designed to meet your child where they are. It’s not a test you can cram for, which is intentional. We’ll send a short family guide before each window with practical tips to make it a smooth experience.

Student data is handled through NWEA’s secure platform in accordance with their privacy policies. Miacademy will use aggregate data from the pilot to better understand student growth and improve our platform. For example, if we notice that our 4th-grade students are excelling in math, we’ll evaluate our 4th-grade math course to see how we could use it to improve our other courses! Please rest assured that individual student data is never sold or shared for advertising.
