U.S. Geography Unit 4: The Midwest

Unit 4 in Miacademy’s online US Geography course for upper elementary grades is The Midwest. It focuses on the stunning landscapes and important pieces of history that define this region of the United States.

Unit Overview: The Midwest

The unit includes a lesson on the iconic landmark of Mount Rushmore, where students will learn about the history, meaning, and significance of this important site and how it represents the Midwest region.

Throughout the unit, students will continue to develop their map skills and understanding of the world around them. They will gain a deep understanding of the Midwest region of the United States and how it relates to the other regions of the country.

Lesson 1: Operation Exploration: The Midwest Part 1

In this lesson, students will use their map skills to explore and understand the physical geography of the Midwest region of the United States. They will explore the climate of the Midwest, and how it affects the region’s environment and ecosystems. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and describe the landforms, climate, and wildlife of the states in the Midwest region of the United States.

Lesson 2: Operation Exploration: The Midwest Part 2

In this lesson, students will continue to explore the geography of the Midwest region of the United States, focusing on its economic and natural resources. They will learn about the major industries and economic drivers that shape the region’s economy, and the natural resources that are found in the Midwest. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and describe the industry, economy, and natural resources of the states in the Midwest region of the United States.

Lesson 3: Operation Exploration: The Midwest Part 3

In this lesson, students will continue to explore the rich history and culture of the Midwest region of the United States. They will learn about the major landmarks and historical sites that are found in the region. They will also explore the diverse food and cultural traditions that define the Midwest. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and describe the landmarks, food, and culture of the Midwest region of the United States.

Lesson 4: Mount Rushmore

In this lesson, students will focus on one of the most iconic landmarks in the Midwest region, Mount Rushmore. They will learn about the history of the park, including its creation, design, and installation. This lesson will also introduce students to the park’s significance to the region and the nation, including its impact on tourism and American identity. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to explain the history, meaning, and significance of Mount Rushmore.

Unit 5: The West
