U.S. Geography Unit 3: The South

The third unit in Miacademy’s online US Geography course for upper elementary grades is The South. It focuses on the South region of the country, which is home to several major cities and a variety of historical and cultural landmarks.

The unit includes four lessons:

Lesson 1: Operation Exploration: The South Part 1

In this lesson, students will use their map skills to explore and understand the physical geography of the South region of the United States. They will learn to identify the shapes that define the region’s unique character. Additionally, students will understand the climate and ecosystems of the region. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and describe the landforms, climate, and wildlife of the states in the South region of the United States.

Lesson 2: Operation Exploration: The South Part 2

In this lesson, students will continue to explore the geography of the South region of the United States, focusing on its economic and natural resources. They will learn about the major industries and economic drivers that shape the region’s economy, and the natural resources that are found in the South. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and describe the industry, economy, and natural resources of the states in the South region of the United States.

Lesson 3: Operation Exploration: The South Part 3

In this lesson, students will continue to explore the rich history and culture of the South region of the United States. They will learn about the major landmarks and historical sites that are found in the region. Additionally, students will learn about the diverse food and cultural traditions that define the region, including the people and communities that have shaped the region’s history and culture. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and describe the landmarks, food, and culture of the South region of the United States.

Lesson 4: Smoky Mountains National Park

In this lesson, students will focus on one of the most iconic landmarks in the South region, the Smoky Mountains National Park. They will learn about the history of the park, including its creation, design, and installation. Additionally, students will understand the meaning and symbolism behind the park, including its ecological and recreational significance. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to explain the history and significance of Smoky Mountains National Park.

Unit 4: The Midwest
