What is the K12 Learning Acceleration Grant in Virginia?

In response to the challenges posed by the pandemic, Governor Glenn Youngkin announced the K-12 Learning Acceleration Grant would create $68 million in funding for K-12 education. This grant provides financial support for various qualifying educational services, ranging from academic tutoring to speech therapy and beyond. These services are all covered by the Learning Acceleration Grant with the goal of ensuring students’ educational progress doesn’t suffer as a result of the pandemic.

In the past school year (as of February 12, 2024) the program awarded grants totaling $70,692,000 to 34,551 students, with individual awards ranging from $1,500 to $3,000. These funds were allocated to cover expenses associated with tutoring in essential subjects such as English, reading, writing, mathematics, science, history, social science, and foreign languages required to meet state standards.

The tutoring could be delivered through multiple formats: one-on-one, small group, or large group settings, and executed in-person, virtually, or via a hybrid approach. The grant can also be used to purchase assistive technologies for students with disabilities, up to a limit of $750, as well as for specialized educational therapy services.

Eligible services include…

  • Speech and language therapy
  • Specialized reading instruction
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy

Through this comprehensive support, the Virginia learning grant plays a crucial role in Virginia’s efforts to ensure that the pandemic does not leave a lasting mark on the educational achievements of its students.

Who Qualifies for the VA Learning Acceleration Grant?

Virginia’s program is accessible to every school-aged student who has not graduated high school. This inclusivity provides a chance for parents in Virginia to secure grants that offer substantial educational support, enhancing their children’s learning experiences and confidence in school.

There are two different award amounts: the $1,500 grant and $3,000 grant. The allocation of these grants is based on a first-come, first-served policy, dependent on the completion of all documents and application approval. Eligibility extends to families of children in any educational setting –  public, charter, private, or at home – as long as they are residents of Virginia and of school age.

The $1,500 award amount is available to all Virginia students. However, to apply for the $3,000 grant, parents must provide proof that their family income does not exceed 300% of the Federal Poverty Guideline.

How Do I Get Miacademy with the K12 Learning Acceleration Grant?

Once approved for the scholarship, funds will be available in the parent’s Classwallet account. Miacademy can be purchased directly through the Classwallet marketplace or paid for through reimbursement.

For reimbursements, vendors will provide parents with an invoice. Parents can upload this invoice into the ClassWallet platform to submit for reimbursement approval by the Virginia Department of Education. All payments must be made after the services have been provided.
