Kindergarten Language Arts (ELA) Curriculum

In kindergarten, students build a foundation of essential early literacy skills for a lifetime of learning! Whether they’re sounding out words when reading aloud, recognizing letters on a book cover, or sharing a story with a friend, they’re developing the reading, writing, and communication abilities they’ll use every day.

Kindergarten language arts is an important first step in helping students develop strong reading, writing, and communication skills. At this stage, children explore concepts like recognizing letters and their sounds, blending sounds to form words, understanding simple sentences, and expressing ideas through speaking and drawing. Mastering these skills early on leads to success in reading comprehension, writing, and confident communication.

Miacademy makes learning to read and write easy! With interactive lessons, quizzes, and hands-on activities, kids build essential literacy skills while having fun.

Many educators wonder if their student is ready for kindergarten language arts concepts or if there are skills they need to master first.

In kindergarten language arts, students learn to recognize letters, understand letter sounds, spell simple words, and express ideas through speaking, writing, and drawing. Don’t worry if your child isn’t reading or writing yet — that’s what a kindergarten language arts curriculum covers! Instead, look for key developmental signs, such as an interest in stories, the ability to recognize familiar symbols, and enjoyment of rhyming and wordplay, to gauge your student’s readiness.

Your student is likely ready for kindergarten language arts if they can:

  • Identify some words and both uppercase and lowercase letters, including a few letters in their name
  • Understand that words are made up of sounds and identify the beginning sounds in words
  • Follow simple directions, listen to stories, and answer basic questions about what they hear
  • Use a pencil or crayon properly, trace shapes and letters, and attempt to write their name
  • Engage in conversations, use complete sentences, and express thoughts and feelings clearly

By the end of the year, students will master kindergarten language arts standards and be able to:

  1. Recognize and Name All Letters — Identify uppercase and lowercase letters and know their corresponding sounds
  2. Understand Basic Phonics — Blend letter sounds to read simple words (e.g., “cat,” “dog”)
  3. Identify High Frequency Words — Fluently read common sight words, like “can” and “have”
  4. Demonstrate Phonemic Awareness — Identify beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words, recognize rhyming words, and break words into syllables.
  5. Read Simple Sentences — Use picture clues and phonics skills to read basic sentences and familiar texts with some fluency
  6. Comprehend and Retell Stories — Answer questions about a story, recall key details, and sequence events (beginning, middle, and end)
  7. Write Letters and Simple Words — Form letters correctly, write their name, and spell some high-frequency words (e.g., “the,” “and,” “it”)
  8. Express Thoughts Through Writing — Use drawings, letters, and early sentences to convey ideas, often with phonetic spelling
  9. Speak Clearly and in Complete Sentences — Participate in conversations, ask and answer questions, and share ideas with others
  10. Follow Multi-Step Directions — Listen carefully and complete tasks with two or three steps
  11. Understand Basic Print Concepts — Know that text is read from left to right, recognize spaces between words, and understand that words make up sentences

Our Pre-K and Kindergarten reading curriculum is designed to be both engaging and comprehensive! Through rhyming games and letter-sound activities, young learners build phonemic awareness and language skills in an interactive way. Drag-and-drop games and positive reinforcement keep learning fun and effective, helping students develop essential reading skills effortlessly.

Language Skills: Level A introduces basic reading and writing skills that help young learners develop confidence in literacy. By the end of the course, students will be able to tell stories and identify key story elements, building a strong base for future reading comprehension and writing abilities.

The course begins with an introduction to print concepts, where students learn about the parts of a book, how to handle books properly, and the direction in which text is read. Understanding these basics helps students navigate books independently and prepares them for more advanced reading skills.

  • Reading a Book
  • Early Writing: Basic Story Elements
  • Early Writing: Story Sequencing
  • Early Writing: Telling a Story Orally

Why is there more than one course?

Miacademy’s language arts curriculum is structured into three different courses, each that focus on a different set of skills:

Learn to Read (Levels A-C only): Focuses on letter sounds, rhyming, and common letter patterns to help kids practice reading for kindergarten to 2nd grade.
Language Skills (All levels): Covers comprehension strategies, grammar, and storytelling techniques to strengthen reading and writing.
Reading Comprehension (Levels C-I only): Provides weekly reading passages with questions to reinforce understanding and apply learned skills.
Students may work at different levels in each area to match their individual learning needs.

Our ELA curriculum goes beyond just reading and writing — it’s about mastering communication, thinking critically, and expressing ideas with confidence and creativity.

Our K-8 courses use inquiry-based learning to encourage curiosity, guiding students to analyze texts, ask thought-provoking questions, and engage on a deeper level with their reading. Designed by experienced educators, our lessons nurture both confidence and curiosity, helping students develop strong literacy skills they’ll use throughout their lives.
