What is the IDEA Alaska Homeschool Allotment?
IDEA Alaska is an organization that provides resources and support for homeschool parents. It’s the largest and longest-running homeschool organization in the state and offers extensive opportunities to connect with other homeschoolers via clubs, events, field trips, support groups, and more. IDEA’s enrollment approach respects the importance of freedom with homeschooling, and “only provides as much — or as little support as [parents] require” (IDEA Media).
In addition to social and support opportunities, IDEA also provides financial assistance with their annual homeschool allotment. The average allotment for the 2023-2024 school year is $2,700 for full-time enrollment. IDEA’s allotment has very minimal restrictions, and their online marketplace partners with vendors to provide special discounts. They even offer leasing programs for the more expensive hardware, such as laptops and iPads, to make quality online homeschool curricula more accessible than ever.
Who Qualifies for IDEA Alaska?
The IDEA Alaska program currently offers an allotment for students ages 5-19 as of September 1st each year. To qualify, your student must live in Alaska and be enrolled in at least four classes through IDEA to receive the full amount.
A child who is at least 4 years old by September 1st is also eligible to enroll, provided that they have an older sibling who is already enrolled in the program. Children under age 5 are eligible for a $275 allotment.
Enrollment is a requirement to receive the homeschool allotment. When you’re enrolled with IDEA, you gain access to allotment funds in addition to homeschool support groups, student clubs, high school graduation ceremonies, and so much more.
To receive the full allotment, you must be enrolled full time. There are four different types of enrollment:
1. Full-time enrollment
To be a full-time student, you must enroll in a minimum of four classes with IDEA, and two of those must be a core subject, such as math, science, social studies, language arts, foreign language, or technology.
2. Part-time enrollment
Part-time students may be enrolled in one to three classes through IDEA. Allotment availability is decided case by case, based on their other part-time enrollment.
3. IDEA students attending classes at a local public school
Students may be enrolled part time with IDEA and part time at a public school if they are taking at least one class at the public school. Since full-time IDEA enrollment requires four classes, each class a student takes at the public school decreases their homeschool allotment amount by 25%.
4. IDEA students attending a local private school
For students attending a local private school, their private school courses don’t immediately disqualify them from the homeschool allotment. As long as there are four private school courses that are secular and 50% core, they may count toward the homeschool enrollment amount. Again, this varies case by case, so it’s best to contact an IDEA representative before moving forward.
