Miacademy’s 4th Grade Math Curriculum
By the fourth grade, students now have a good grasp on basic math concepts, such as addition, subtraction, measurement, and shapes. This year, students will begin to combine their knowledge of the four operations to solve multi-step problems. They’ll also touch on more advanced geometry concepts, as well as decimals and advanced place value.
Miacademy’s fourth grade math curriculum teaches these topics and more in a fun and memorable way! Instead of focusing solely on memorization, our interactive curriculum helps students make connections between their knowledge of math skills to become confident and creative problem solvers.

Is my student ready for 4th grade math concepts?
Before beginning fourth grade math lessons, students should have a solid understanding of third grade math concepts.
While not required, we suggest students take our third grade math course, Math Level D, before beginning fourth grade math.
Some other signs your child is ready for 4th grade math would be if they:
- Can add and subtract multi-digit numbers with regrouping
- Know basic multiplication and division facts (up to 12 × 12)
- Understand place value at least up to the thousands
- Can solve simple word problems using the four operations
- Can identify and compare basic fractions (like 1/2 and 3/4)
- Can read and create simple bar graphs or pictographs
- Recognize basic geometric shapes and their attributes

What are the fourth grade math standards?
Math in fourth grade covers complex fractions, multiplication, and division rules. Students will also begin to explore geometry skills like parallels, angle types, and symmetry. With this combined knowledge, students will be able to solve multi-step math problems using the four operations by the end of the year.
Common fourth grade math standards include being able to:
- Multiply two-digit numbers by one- or two-digit numbers
- Divide larger numbers, including long division with remainders
- Understand place value up to the millions
- Round whole numbers to any place
- Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers
- Compare both equivalent fractions and fractions with different denominators
- Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators
- Understand decimal notation for fractions and compare decimals to the hundredths
- Solve multi-step word problems using the four operations
- Identify factors and multiples, including prime and composite numbers
- Understand and measure angles and solve angle-measurement problems
- Classify shapes based on parallel sides, angle types, and symmetry
Standards can vary by state, so be sure to check what’s required where you live.
Scope and Sequence
4th Grade Math Curriculum (Math Level E)
In fourth grade, students build on previously learned skills to tackle more complex problems, especially multi-step multiplication and long division word problems.
Our fourth grade math curriculum covers key topics like two-digit multiplication, long division, and working with both decimals and improper fractions. Students explore measurement more deeply, using units like centimeters, inches, ounces, and pounds. They’ll also dive into geometry by learning about lines, angles, area, and perimeter — laying the foundation for more advanced geometry in 5th and middle school grades.
