3rd Grade Math

Miacademy’s 3rd Grade Math Curriculum

In third grade, students now have a good grasp on basic math concepts such as addition, subtraction, and basic shapes. This year, students will learn about multiplication, beginning to memorize multiplication tables and even simple division rules. Students will also expand on their knowledge of measurement and geometry to calculate perimeter and area.

Our 3rd grade math curriculum uses life-based learning — and we’re not just talking about word problems! In each lesson, students will follow Justin and Mia through situations like a community market, a family barbecue, and the park to learn about real-world math applications.

With interactive lessons, quizzes, and hands-on activities, Miacademy’s online third grade math curriculum keeps students engaged while building confidence in their math abilities.

A good sign your child is prepared for math in third grade is if they’ve mastered second grade math concepts. Before working on third grade math skills, we suggest students complete our second grade course Math: Level C.

Your student is likely ready for third grade math if they:

  1. Are comfortable with two-digit addition and subtraction
  2. Understand place value up to at least 1,000
  3. Are beginning to grasp multiplication as repeated addition
  4. Can solve simple word problems using addition or subtraction
  5. Can explain their thinking when solving math problems
  6. Recognize basic 2D and 3D shapes
  7. Understand simple fractions, like halves and thirds
  8. Tell time to the nearest five minutes on an analog clock
  9. Can count coins and make change
  10. Can measure length using inches or centimeters

Each video lesson has printable math worksheets with additional activities to extend learning beyond the screen with a hands-on approach!

Math in third grade focuses on multiplication and division, reading graphs and charts, improving an understanding of fractions, and beginning to solve multi-step math problems. Third grade math standards include:

  1. Multiplication & Division: Understanding concepts and facts up to 10×10 and applying them to solve word problems
  2. Fractions: Understanding fractions as numbers, comparing fractions, and placing them on a number line
  3. Place Value: Working with numbers up to 1,000 or beyond and understanding hundreds, tens, and ones
  4. Addition & Subtraction: Fluency with multi-digit addition and subtraction using standard algorithms
  5. Measurement & Data: Telling time to the minute, measuring lengths, understanding area and perimeter, and interpreting graphs and charts
  6. Geometry: Recognizing and categorizing shapes and understanding attributes like angles and sides
  7. Math Reasoning: Explaining thinking, using strategies, and solving multi-step problems

Standards can vary by state, so be sure to check requirements where you live.

3rd grade math lessons begin to tackle more multiplication and division, advanced word problems, four-digit addition, and three-digit subtraction. Students will explore fractions in greater depth, learning to find equivalents, as well as add and subtract fractions. The curriculum also introduces rounding, advanced measuring, and perimeter calculating. By presenting these concepts in real-world scenarios, our curriculum boosts confidence in everyday practical math applications.
