Second grade math standards focus on advancing addition and subtraction skills, counting money and telling time, and introducing students to basic multiplication. Some examples of topics second graders learn in math:

  1. Number Sense & Place Value – Understanding numbers up to 1,000, recognizing place value (hundreds, tens, and ones), and comparing numbers
  2. Addition & Subtraction – Building on previous knowledge of addition and subtraction facts within 10, including working with numbers up to 1,000 using regrouping
  3. Word Problems – Solving one- and two-step problems using addition and subtraction
  4. Introduction to Multiplication – Understanding equal groups as a foundation for multiplication
  5. Money & Time – Counting coins, making change, and telling time to the nearest five minutes
  6. Measurement & Data – Measuring length using standard units (inches, centimeters), interpreting bar graphs and picture graphs
  7. Shapes & Geometry – Recognizing and describing 2D and 3D shapes, understanding attributes like sides and angles, and dividing shapes into equal parts (fractions)
  8. Patterns & Logical Thinking – Identifying number patterns and developing reasoning skills

Second graders will begin solving word problems about everyday situations to help them connect math to its real-world applications. At this stage, they’re also working with three-digit numbers in both addition and subtraction, building their confidence with larger numbers. Plus, they’re beginning to explore patterns in operations, building foundational skills to assist students in learning multiplication and division.
