ESA programs give you the power to use your child\u2019s public school education funds for private school or homeschool and can lower&nbsp; homeschooling costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although traditionally available for public school students transferring to private schools, some states with ESA programs accept all students in grades K-12 \u2014 including homeschoolers!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like how <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.miacademy.co\/by-state\/\">homeschooling laws vary by state<\/a>, so do rules about ESAs. Please keep in mind that program availability and qualifications vary, and financial aid benefits may depend on your eligibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is an Education Savings Account (ESA)?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>ESAs are publicly funded, government-approved savings accounts for education. The purpose of these accounts is to reallocate the taxes that you pay for your students to attend public school tuition-free. In the United States, the average annual cost of a public school education is $13,201 per student (<a href=\"https:\/\/wisevoter.com\/state-rankings\/per-pupil-spending-by-state\/\">WiseVoter<\/a>). These accounts allow you to claim some money back to pay for alternative educational expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ESAs are tax-deferred and federal tax-free and are meant to cover qualified K-12 or higher education expenses. We\u2019ve provided a basic description to help you know what to expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get an ESA, first check to see if your state offers one. Then, determine your eligibility. You can find eligibility information on your education department website. Eligibility factors can include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Resource availability for the current school year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Age or grade level of your students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Total size of your family<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Total household income<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disability or other learning difference<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After approval, your account will be activated, and you can gain funding. Once you receive funding, check the ESA\u2019s list of qualified education expenses before making a purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using Your Education Savings Account Funds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each state\u2019s ESA usage rules are different.
