If you\u2019re considering homeschooling in New York City, you\u2019re not alone! With nearly <\/span>15,000 students<\/span><\/a> choosing home education in New York City, homeschooling has become a popular choice for parents across all five boroughs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city is a great place to homeschool, giving parents unique opportunities for field trip destinations, groups and co-ops, resources, and support that only NYC can offer!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before you begin, it’s important to know that homeschool laws are determined at the state level \u2014 while NYC provides many unique opportunities for homeschoolers, the rules are the same throughout the state of New York. As long as you are familiar with the <\/span>State of New York\u2019s homeschool laws<\/span><\/a>, you can educate your children at home with confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Start Homeschooling in NYC<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The only difference between homeschooling in NYC and New York State as a whole is that the city provides additional opportunities for enrichment. The laws and regulations governing home education are the same throughout the state.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before you begin homeschooling, you\u2019ll need to ensure you\u2019re following all the rules and regulations set by the state of New York. You will need to:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Fill out a letter of intent<\/a> and email it to the NYC Department of Education at letterofintent@schools.nyc.gov<\/a>. You can submit your letter for the 2025-26 school year beginning July 1, 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Submit an Individualized Home Instruction Plan (IHIP) within 28 days of beginning homeschooling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Select a homeschool curriculum that meets New York State\u2019s subject requirements, as set by the education department.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Keep attendance records that show an equivalent instruction of 180 days a year. Students in K-6th grade must be taught for at least 900 hours, 990 hours for grades 7th-12th.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Provide a standardized test for your child every other year, beginning in 4th grade, and annually beginning in 9th grade.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Submit quarterly reports and assessments.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
